If you’ve finally had enough of the depressing dimness of your bathroom and are ready to embark on remodeling, then it’s time for a few tips on bathroom lighting.

Start With Lots of Light

In most areas of your home, natural light is usually a great first choice to bring freshness and brightness to any room. But in bathrooms, privacy is a priority, so you’ll often be faced with an unfortunately dark room with glazed or rippled windows, if there are any at all. The solution, of course, is to add artificial light—as much as you need to make your bathroom comfortably bright.

Placement Is Important

Where there’s light, there’s shadow, and that’s as much the case with bathroom lighting as anything else. Not only can heavy shadows be unflattering, but they can also make it more difficult to see when you’re doing delicate tasks like putting in your contact lenses, shaving, applying makeup, or just trying to find a pesky eyelash that has been poking you for a while.

Don’t worry. You can easily enhance your bathroom lighting by adding lights in different positions. Instead of only using overhead bathroom lighting, consider a few vanity lights at eye level around the mirror to get rid of those pesky shadows and bathe your whole face in light.

Consider the Temperature

Once you’ve decided on your bathroom lighting and the placement of your lighting fixtures, don’t forget to choose the proper “temperature,” or color of your lighting. Warmer, more rosy light can create a cozy, relaxing feeling. While you should never choose bathroom lighting “colder” than natural light, as it can make your space feel unfriendly, slightly cooler or neutral tones of lighting can give your space a clean, polished feeling.
